Links

We have a few websites that we find incredibly useful when trying to determine yarn and needle sizes from the vintage patterns.

Yarn Weights @ The Craft Yarn Council
This site provides information on the modern yarn weights and their appropriate needle sizes. Both knitting needle and crochet hook sizes (US & metric) are provided. They also include a gauge range for each weight of yarn. This is a really great site to use.

VintageKnits.com - Database of Discontinued Yarn
This site is good for providing information on discontinued yarns. It has the most comprehensive lists of discontinued yarns that we have found.

Ravelry.com - Yarns
Ravelry has a lot of discontinued yarns listed, often with pictures of the yarns. Users upload information about their projects, including the yarn, which is then compiled into a searchable database of modern and vintage yarns.

VintageYarnWikia.com
We (eStitches) are putting together a wiki page of vintage yarns. We are including ads from the many pattern books that we have to provide pictures of the yarns that are used in the vintage patterns. We encourage people to add information to the wiki as they find it.

Knitting-Crochet.com - Needle Conversions
Looking to find the modern equivalents of the needles and hooks called for in your vintage pattern? This is a great site to start at.

FiberGypsy.com - Needle Sizes
This is another great site for converting knitting needles sizes from vintage to modern.

KnitItNow.com - Cones of Lace Weight Yarn
Someone asked us if we knew where to find cones of lace weight yarn. It wasn't as quick and easy as we thought it would be, but we came up with this site. They have many different lace weight yarns available for sale. More than any other site we found. We haven't purchased from them yet, but thought it was a good option and/or starting point.
